The 762 Dering Letters were received, on the most part, by members of the Dering family at Shelter Island between 1733 and 1838. All 762 letters are in Volume 1, 1733-1775; Volume 2, 1776-1800; Volume 3, 1801-1838. Thirty percent of the letters were written by women, and they are also in Women's Words 1773-1838.

The letters were saved by three generations and were given to the Shelter Island Library in 1916 by General Sylvester Dering of Utica, New York.
